European Dairy Market Overview at the End of June 2019

WESTERN OVERVIEW

Western European milk production is past the peak almost everywhere and is falling seasonally. Unusually early high temperatures in the significant milk producing countries, Germany and France, contribute to declines. Parts of both countries have recently reached the high 80s Fahrenheit. Extreme heat lingers this week and is projected to reach into the 90śs next week.

EU milk production is advancing from the slower than anticipated early 2019 start. January- April EU milk production is ahead of the same period last year, up 0.4 percent according to CLAL data provided to USDA. April 2019 EU milk production is 1.3 percent higher than April 2018 according to ZMB.

Cheese production continues to be a priority for Western European milk. Domestic demand is srong, as is export interest. EU cheese exports January-April this year were up 3 percent from the same months last year according to Eurostat. The United States bought 7 percent more EU cheese during the period this year.

EU cheese production January-April 2019, 3.2 million MT, was up 0.7 percent from the same period of 2018, according to CLAL data provided to USDA.

EASTERN OVERVIEW

Cheese accounts for about one-third of Russiaśs dairy imports according to Eucolait. April 2019 Russian cheese imports increased 5.5 percent from April last year. Butter imports during April increased 148.4 percent. Belarus was by far and away the primary source for the Russian butter and cheese imports.
