USDA: European Dairy Market Overview at the End of January 2020

WESTERN OVERVIEW:
EU milk production during November 2019 was up 0.9 percent from November 2018, according to Eucolait. January – November 2019 milk production was up 0.5 percent from January –November 2018. The November YOY increase reflected increases in a number of the more significant milk producing nations, such as Netherlands, +2.8 percent; France, +1.7 percent; Italy, +1.2 percent; and Germany, +0.4 percent. These four countries continue to lag January – November 2018 for January – November 2019, even with the good November YOY results. Ireland reported a decrease of 8.3 percent in November 2018 compared with November 2018, reflecting poor weather conditions.
The more positive increases in official November milk production data seem to be carrying forward, according to observations by dairy officials in parts of Western Europe. Comment sare that winter has been mild, even slightly warm. There has been rain rather than snow in some recent weeks. This has contributed to a firmer start to 2020 milk production. Milk fat production increased more than milk production. EU milkfat production in 2019 through November was 1.5 percent higher than January – November 2018 according to ZMB .January – November EU milk protein production set a record.
EU cheese production January – November 2019 increased 0.1 percent from January – November 2018, according to Eucolait. Many of the primary cheese producing nations increased production with the exception of France, -0.5 percent, and Italy, -2.6 percent.
EU cheese exports in November 2019 were up 6.6 percent from November 2018, according to Eucolait. Stronger exports to the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Egypt helped boost exports. January – November cheese exports, 808,537 MT, increased 5.2 percent from January– November 2018.
EASTERN OVERVIEW:
November was a good month for milk production in much of Eastern Europe. November 2019 milkproduction exceeded November 2018 milk production in Poland, Czech Republic, Bulgaria,Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, and the Baltic States according to ZMB. Milk production waslower in Croatia and Romania.
