European Dairy Market Overview at the End Of November 2019
Report 47 – Released on November 21, 2019
WESTERN OVERVIEWEU
milk production January – September this year increased 0.4 percent from the same period in 2018, according to CLAL data provided to USDA. Among countries, milk production in Germany decreased 0.3 percent, French milk production decreased 0.7 percent, Netherlands milk production decreased 1.4 percent, United Kingdom milk production increased 1.4 percent, and Irish milk production increased 8.0 percent. As we near the point where the number of weeks left in 2019 can be counted on the fingers of one hand, it becomes more challenging to yield much of an increase in EU YTD milk production as the final annual result. That is especially true because we are near the seasonal low point of production. Nevertheless, there are some favorable signs in the two largest milk producing countries, Germany and France. During the first part of November, unofficial observations report 1.7 percent more milk produced in France than the corresponding week in 2018. In Germany, production was 0.2 percent higher than last year.
A serious situation is developing with the World Trade Organization, based in Geneva. This is the organization which decides disputes concerning the global rule based multinational trading system. A dispute among some member states is preventing appointment of new judges needed in early December to comprise a forum so the appellate body can meet to rule on trade disputes. The stalement will also result in the new budget not being timely passed.Negotiations continue but the outcome, and timing of a resolution, remain uncertain.EU cheese production January – September this year increased 0.3 percent from the same period in 2018, according to CLAL data provided to USDA. Among countries, cheese production in Germany increased 1.9 percent, French cheese production increased 0.1 percent,Netherlands cheese production increased 2.9 percent, and United Kingdom cheese production increased 1.4 percent.
Cheese exports from the EU January – September this year, 649,445 MT, increased 4 percent from the same period of 2018, according to Eurostat. Among the top three destinations, the export percentage changes were: United States, +12 percent; Japan, +4 percent; and Switzerland, +1 percent.
EASTERN OVERVIEW

Among dairy products manufactured in Poland, percentage changes for the period were: WMP, +12.5 percent; cheese, +1.1 percent; butter, -0.2 percent; and SMP, -3.2 percent.
